The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed responsibility for a cruise missile strike on the vessel, which they identified as "US-owned". The first projectile impacted the ship while a pilot was still onboard, followed shortly thereafter by a second strike on the crew accommodation area. Prior to the event, the 4,814 TEU vessel had been unloading cargo at Umm Qasr and was observed to be partially laden with empty containers. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) noted the incident occurred approximately 40 nautical miles southeast of the port, resulting in a large explosion on the vessel's starboard side. MSC Mediterranean Shipping Co. has confirmed that all crew members are safe and that the vessel and its cargo have been secured. Authorities are currently investigating the incident.
