Seller → buyer: Ray Car Carriers Ltd → Hyundai Glovis Co Ltd

Reported price: USD 74.000 million

Note: Ray Car Carriers has sold two pure car/truck carrier (PCTC) newbuildings to Hyundai Glovis. Car-carrier players say the Israeli shipowner has offloaded two of the four 7,700-ceu PCTC vessels it ordered at South Korea's Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) in 2016. They add that the ships — the Golden Ray and Silver Ray (both built 2007) — were sold at the end of last year for $74m each. Their order price was around $77.75m apiece. “This is not a simple sale and purchase deal between Ray and Hyundai Glovis,” one car-carrier player said. “I believe there are some forms of cooperation between the two companies.” TradeWinds is told that Hyundai Glovis took delivery of the two ships from HMD last month. One source familiar with Hyundai Glovis confirms the company bought the PCTCs, as it had been seeking to purchase secondhand vessels since last summer. “Hyundai Glovis has redelivered some of the ships that it took on long-term charter back to the owners and it needs to replace them with new tonnage,” a car-carrier source said. With the acquisition of the Golden Ray and Silver Ray, Hyundai Glovis now has a fleet of 34 owned PCTCs. The Seoul-based shipping company, which is also active in the dry bulk sector, controls more than 60 PCTCs. Most of the ships are transporting for Hyundai Motor Co and Kia Motors. Ray is believed to have ordered the PCTC newbuildings at HMD on speculation and could not find employment for the ships. With the sale of the pair, Ray is still left with two vessels under construction at the yard. Ulsan-based HMD is slated to hand over the remaining two in 2019. “The car-carrier market has not been doing well for the past 10 years due to the Lehman Brothers shock and excess supply of ships in the sector,” one Asia-based car-carrier expert said. “However, the number of PCTC newbuildings joining the segment this year is limited and this may have [a] positive effect on the business.”
