On the early morning of June 19, 2026, at approximately 03:30 local time, the Japanese-flagged Ro-Ro cargo ship Niraikanai II ran aground on the western rocky coastline of Toshima Island, Tokyo, while en route from Osaka to Tokyo. Incident Status: The vessel remains aground. As of June 21, 2026, initial attempts to refloat the ship using two tugs—the Koyo Maru and the Seiwa Maru—during high tide were unsuccessful. Authorities are coordinating diver inspections and further refloating operations. Vessel and Cargo: The 11,687-gt vessel, owned and operated by Ryukyu Kaiun Kaisha (RKK Line), was transporting a cargo of vehicles and trailers. While aerial footage shows the vessel's bulbous bow resting on the rocks, there has been no report of significant hull damage. Safety and Environment: All 17 crew members on board were reported safe and unharmed. There have been no reports of flooding, oil pollution, or environmental damage.
